unusual but natural: Morning Glory

Those who at first glance sembrebbero artificial formations shown in the image above are really rare but natural clouds, known in English Morning Glory. According to reports from the site NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day of August 24, 2009, these clouds can reach a length of 1000 km and forming a straight-up to 2000 meters. The image was taken by photographer Mick Petroff from his plane near the Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia.

There are clouds similar calls roll cloud, but the Morning Glory formed over Burketown, Queensland Australia, they occur in a predictable way every spring and attract fans of gliding.

One possible explanation of the mechanism formation of these clouds is that of humid air that is cooling on the move meets a inversion layer, which is a layer where the air temperature increases abnormally with increasing altitude, resulting in long horizontal tubes with internal circulation.

These formations moving at 60 miles an hour above the ground and pose a danger to commercial aviation because of their turbulence.

More information about Morning Glory is available from the sources indicated by Wikipedia .
